I just bought a 7 year old gelding my first horse in about 14 years he is broke to ride has a great disposition just a little shy to fresh faces. Any advice on how to win him over when he gets home next week?
Just got hang out with him in his paddock. Groom him, give him a few treats. If he's a bit shy to new people don't ask too much of him until he's more used to you. Give him a couple days to settle into his new place and take him for a few walks in hand until you start riding him.
His settling in time will likely be a few weeks, at least. This is good together time, numerous repetitions on picking up his feet (your farrier will love you for it), groundwork. How about taking walks on a trail you might chose to later ride him on. At least he wouldn't be seeing it for the first time when under saddle.
It just takes time and trust, and there is no quick fix for this. You have to be consistent with him and you have to spend time with him.
Congrats on your new horse, post some pics when you get him.
