Its such a shame that some people use pain to try to solve things that could have been solved with patient training.
If her tongue has scarring then I shudder to think what happened.
Its going to take time to get her trust and confidence back and as some horses seem to be as much mentally scarred by that sort of treatment as they are physically scarred its making it harder for you both.
I find that getting out of the arena and around the trails helps them. They've got other stuff to look at and think about so it distracts them from being so focused on worrying that they're going to get their mouths ripped at again.

She bit a golf ball sized hole in it a week after she got back from the trainers.

I really would like to do some trails with her, but the only trail like stuff we have around is roads. Her deciding that something is scary and turning back (and rearing/backing up when i try and turn back around) doesnt help. At shows i would take her and pony my other horse and walk them around (one venue even has a river!) and we'd go on 2 hour walks before i put them to bed and she really enjoyed it and would go in a halter.
