I am in search of any exercises/drills you can think of or have done. Currently, I am training a 10 year old Thoroughbred gelding as a 4-H training project. He catches on to things to quickly that I am running out of things to do. I am open to drills/exercises for every discipline as he will be a showmanship, western pleasure, english pleasure, trail, gaming, goat tying, cow, etc... horse.

Looking for groundwork, and in the saddle ideas.

I have cones, poles, jumps, and a roundpen available!

A horse is so docile at nature that he would always rather do right than wrong, if only he could be taught to distinguish one from the other.

You could try working on counterarcing and pivoting in the saddle, then put those to use when barrel racing, start at a walk first. You could just line the barrels up with several feet
of space, then do counterarcing around them.

You could try out some slow pole bending. Walk/trot past the poles/cones and then turn and weave, turn and weave, and walk/trot back.

You could set up a course. If he sidepasses you can have him sidepass over a pole, add some jumps, weave poles, figure eights, roping a dummy.
