How to get my mare to stand tied

I have a Thoroughbred mare who ties ok cause she does not pull but she doesn't stand srill she does noot mive much if I am there but if I leave she paws the ground and moves her body around. I was told just to leave her tied alone for awhile to teach her patients and I was wondering if that is right or if there is other things I should do?

Tie her up and go about what you need to do around the barn, but always keep her in your sight so you can help if something happens.

For the pawing, my old gelding used to do this. We would tie him up, collect a handful of gravel (3/4"-1" works best), then sit down about 20 feet away from him and completely ignore him. We would chat, condition saddles and bridles, read, anything but pay attention to him. The second he started acting up, we would chuck a rock at his rump hard enough to get his attention, then growl "Quit it!" so he could hear. Took him a couple of sessions, but he quickly learned that dancing and pawing got him nothing but pelted with rocks.

Make sure when you tie her, she is tied to something solid above whither height. Completely ignore her while she is tied and don`t untie her until she is standing quietly.

How long have you had her? How long has she acted this way? Have you moved her to a new facility recently -- or is this a long-running problem?

While I agree with the previous posters who recommend "practice" at standing tied, I wanted to add that when I first bought my mare and moved her to a new facility, she was a little jittery when tied. After she had a bit of time to settle in, this ill behavior stopped entirely. JME.
