Hello. I have a yearling that I just got that was not halter broke. First day we went to get him he pulled away from owner and got loose and it took us forever to get him caught. I think this is where the problem started. Now he is halter broke and knows how to lead, lunge, flex, lower head and more... I asked him to lunge today outside of his pen and he took off and pulled me over. I went and got him back and asked him again and he did the same thing. He hasn’t had much handling besides me so I’m worried about taking him new places and him taking off if he spooks! I would probably never catch him.
We do have a tree in the middle of our pasture. I decided to ask him there to to lunge while I wrapped the lunge once around the tree for insurance. He lunged around a couple times like he does in his pen and then he jumped backwards and pulled. He stopped once he realized he couldn’t get away with it. Then I asked him to move along again and he did nice and calmly for a few laps then took off and broke the lunge line and flipped himself over.
How should I handle this before it gets bad?
