Hi bsms, my name is Steph, I'm based in NZ.

Due to current events and drastic law changes here in NZ my husband and I are seriously considering immigrating to the US. Our customer base is already 90% American and we have met some wonderful friends all over the States through our business. Talking to various friends and based on our business stats, because of the nature of our business we have short listed our move to possibly New Mexico, Arizona or Texas.

My concern is this: I have no idea how to keep a horse in an arid environment. I am in Taranaki where grass is plentiful and hay is cheap. My question is how much land is required to keep one horse in a desert area? How much land versus needing /not needing to buy supplementary fodder? Of all my worries about moving to another country it is my absolute ignorance in horse maintenance in an alien (to me) environment that worries me the most.

Any advice would be most welcome.
    Sincerely,
    Steph. (kiwigirl)

Some time ago, on a thread of mine inquiring about riding position and trail riding, you gave me the advice to "slouch" when feeling tense or anxious if I was having problems leaning back/sitting up instead of leaning too far forward. I went on my first real trail ride on Friday of around 4 hours or so, and reminding myself to "slouch" when I did not have the capacity to otherwise relax or adjust my position helped tremendously! While my riding is so far from pretty, I did not come out of my saddle on the rougher down-hill slopes, so that surely counts for something. So, thanks again!

No idea how the visitor messages work. I hope if I reply here, it will be visible to TXhorseman. I'll try and see...

Hmmm...my response was 7,717 characters and only 1,000 are allowed. So I'm transferring it to my journal thread:

    Hello, bsms.

My desire in "Learning to ride...." was to warn against too much emphasis on pressure. Perhaps, I shouldn’t have included the idea of the outside leg blocking the haunches.

A horse's skeleton seems to negate bending to match an arc, though the spine can rotate as well as bend laterally. Still, the image helps teach lateral bending of the body – to whatever extent – as well as the neck.

Regarding training: I know little of the French language, but could probably get a French speaker to turn with me if we were walking casually with my arm around the French speaker’s shoulders. If I turn, the French speaker would probably turn with me.

A relaxed horse responds to subtle influences. Not knowing its training, I can usually obtain a stop without reins after a few minutes getting the horse accustomed to my body moving with its body. I, then use changes in my body to influence the horse. If I stop moving, the horse usually stops moving.
