As a rule, I don't listen to country music, but Dave Stamey has some really nice songs (many of which happen to be horsey related). My favorite: "Come ride with me!"

This is more of a Cowboy song than a horse song, but it is my favorite. This artist grew up in the little town in Texas where my sister lives. The story (behind the song) is that her grandfather watched his elderly wife slowly slipping away due to dementia. They were both in their 90s and he eventually put her in a nursing home and would visit twice a day bringing her meals and just climbing in bed with her and holding her. The day finally came when she no longer knew who he was and fought wildly against him. (and everyone else) As his own body grew feeble it became more heartbreaking for him to fail each time he just tried to get close to his wife... who was all he had left of his life of ranching, horse breaking and rodeo. He eventually broke and one day on his daily visit to see her he took a gun and killed her and himself. The artist gives an incredibly insightful look at her grandfather's situation from the perspective of a tough cowboy. It is a beautiful song. I hope you like it.

Broken by Brooke Graham

We all knew the day he was broken
A colt to break and no strength to hold her
We watched him walk in circles outside
Every breath he took to swallow his pride
Just no strength to hold her
No strength to hold her

He had no feeling in his hands
But he never passed the chance to dance
Grab the reins spin her out of control
A better love story ain’t never been told
Just no strength to hold her
No strength to hold her

She reared up and fought him, plum out of her mind
Hooves pawing in the wind in the dead of night
He was running out of time
He grabbed both of the reins, he couldn’t take anymore
He just wanted it to feel like it did before
Before when he could still hold her

His tired body knelt down at her side
Stroked her mane and wiped a tear from his eye
A fist full of dirt and crumpled hat
Everybody wants to love like that
To hold her…
Shouldn’t be that hard to hold her

She reared up and fought him, plum out of her mind
Hooves pawing in the wind in the dead of night
He was running out of time
He grabbed both of the reins, he couldn’t take anymore
He just wanted it to feel like it did before
Before when he could still hold her

Two gunshots and one heartbreak
Broken down cowboy’s soul to take
Just to hold her
Tears in his eyes dried with her hair
Sometimes Cowboy life ain’t fair
To hold her

She reared up and fought him, plum out of her mind
Hooves pawing in the wind in the dead of night
He was running out of time
He grabbed both of the reins, he couldn’t take anymore
He just wanted it to feel like it did before
Before when he could still hold her
Just to hold her
Just to hold her

Well because my granddaughters both love this song and it's on our playlist when I drive them somewhere, it's my favvy horse song. It's super cute and has a catchy tune. In fact when my youngest g/d was fussy as a baby, my daughter would phone me, & have me sing this song to the baby to cheer her up. Always worked!

@waresbear - catchy tune, but the video when she sings "he'd trot" and he's just slowly loping... irks me out!

Adorable song, but of course can't watch those legs "trot"!

Wonder if Little Red is really Big Red aka Man 'O War??

My personal favorite is Jaquima to Freno by Ian Tyson. "Hey Mr. Vaquero ... put a handle on my pony for me ..."

I also love to ride to the soundtrack to The Horse Whisperer. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses by U2, and (even though it has absolutely nothing to do with horses) Firewater by BT are also fun to ride to (the bit starting at 5:45 is WICKED). I also enjoy listening to anything from One Ok Rock while riding, but they're a Japanese rock band that has never sang anything about horses lol. I just like their music a lot. : )
