I would look for a horse that is calm and safe, and also ask how the horse acts in a herd.
You will find that even with 2 horses that are on the bottom of the pecking order, there will still be one boss horse. I would not get a dominant herd horse. I have one horse that is so dominant that he will run a horse out of the 3 acre pasture, through the fence, if he does not like the other horse.

I would cut the pasture in half and put a gait so you could split them anytime but have the gait open so when they get along they have the big pasture. I would try and get a mare that is the same as your horse now like same size, breed and stuff like that. Good luck!

Why would the horse need to be same size and breed? Size and breed will not determine if two horses will get along or not.

I would recommend you get an older, well trained horse. At least a 10+ yo. I don't think you'd need a big ol' draft. A Quarter Horse could probably be good for him, or even an Arabian (They're not all skinny and 14hh). 15-16hh would probably be good for him too.

Keep in mind the horse may fight. They're establishing who's leader of this pack and I wouldn't separate them unless one horse is getting beaten up really badly.

I advise to set up that fence and allow the horses to meet and greet over the fence for a few days. Then turn them out with each other.
