My late TB needed one because the goof would stand there and smile at the judge when we were lined up. Talk about embarrassing, LOL! I definitely think it's more of a fashion thing though.

They are certainly overused in my area! I did have 1 horse who needed a flash to help him stop chomping and concentrate. It was not ratcheted down tight, though! That is certainly the improper use. And I have had a few I ride in a grackle on cross country.
