I highly recommend New Vocations, any of the Turning For Home satellites (although they're based in the NE), and ReRun. I've also heard some VERY good things about the newer management of Maker's Mark Secretariat Center.
Omg, I was gonna say the same thing! Avoid them like the plague! I did see a couple really nice horses on CanterUSA last night.

Eli Rose & Tihannah: if its not too personal, what was your bad experience with them? Thank you for letting me know I will avoid them! Thanks everyone! I thought I saw something about New Vocations only adopting out to certain states, Illinois not being one of them. I could just be getting them confused with a different organization though.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post negative info on sellers here, but I can PM you if you like.

New Vocations certainly adopts to IL :)

I recommend googling TBSH (or Churchill Hunt Club, their old name). All I'll mention is - on their website they say they were nominated for an Eclipse Award, and have said that it was a special award . . . Welllllllll, special awards don't have nominations. And the hardcore photoshop.

I almost bought a horse from them before I knew anything about anything. Red flags galore when I started researching. Thank goodness for Paypal buyer protection! I also spoke with 3 people personally who purchased a horse from them. All nightmare situations.

New Vocations definitely adopts out to IL - I was approved last year as an adopter. Until I stumbled upon my OTTB that's where I was going to adopt from (I had planned on an OTSTB though not TB). I would totally suggest them as well, they seem very upfront & straightforward about the horses they have. They also strongly encourage communication between you & the trainer.

Like mentioned before make sure you get a PPE. Figure out what wear & tear you can live with & what you can't. My trainer frequently takes horses off the track (she partners with their breeder) & one thing she brought up to me is that "after track calmness." She said she sees a lot that come off, get into work, are totally quiet & then a couple months later aren't the same horse. Just another thing to consider. Galloping Out is another IL based rescue I would be careful adopting from...

I think I saw something about a photoshopped horse from there on the OTTB Connect page on Facebook a few days ago. Didn't put two and two together until I went and searched their website. Thanks for the heads up! I will be checking out NV then :)

Thanks! I haven't heard of Galloping Out before. Are they based more near the Chicago area? I will certainly watch out for them. Curious about what you have heard about them if you don't mind.

I volunteer with Canter Chicago. We have some nice horses here (including a gorgeous 16.3 hand mare, a real stunner - she's dressage only but a lovely horse with a lovely temperament)The spring season at Hawthorne is ending tonight and all the Thoroughbreds are being moved to Arlington (or other tracks) and the Standardbreds will be doing harness racing at Hawthorne in the summer.
We just did a fund raiser with Galloping Out. They are very nice people. If you're uncomfortable getting a horse directly from the track, they bring them on to their farms, let them down a bit and train them. I think they have one farm down in St. Louis area but they are mostly northern Illinois.
If you have experience with OTTBs, I can vouch for both these groups. We really love seeing "our" horses go to good homes.

Why are all of their horses on the beach?
