Question Careers/Work in the Horse World

Just curious who all has a career involving horses? If so, what do you do?

Well... I do rehab and wound care on horses. But only part-time. I do rehab with humans also.

In the past I've been a groom and an exercise rider.

I have friends in the industry that do everything from farrier work, photography, saddle makers, trainers, professional competitors, managers of barns and clubs, veterinarians, a blood stock agent, one that estimates a horse's value for insurance purposes, and some others.

What are your interests?

In the past one company I worked for had a draft hitch for advertising. That was how I got involved with drafts. Horse time was in addition to office time. I didn't have kids so all the extra was not an issue. Just not OT as she paid under a different account and the fringe benefits were great. Free housing, paid working vacations, my training was paid for, travel expenses comped, met some great people and was able to do some incredible things.

Some horse people change their horse, they change their tack and discipline, they change their instructor; they never change themselves.

Had a breeding business for several years but it wouldn't have been possible if there wasn't other money coming in. It supported itself but I never got a paycheck.

I am now retired from professionally working with horses. Don't regret a day of it.

I started at the riding school I had learnt at, when the owners retired and the place was sold, I went to work for one of the owner's daughters.

Moved around quite a bit gaining more experience in different fields.

My forte was working with difficult animals and sorting them out.

I ended my career working for a private breeder of Steeplecahsers - that was twenty years!
