Update, in case it will help anyone else - I don't think it's anything I've done, but the situation sort of resolved itself. I've made it a point to 'get to know' the boss mare and she'll let me walk up and pet on her if I don't have a halter. Today, I was able to retrieve my mare with zero drama - So anyway, sometimes I guess I just need to have patience. I did carry a crop when taking her back into the pasture because boss was at the gate, but I just showed it to her and she walk off. We'll probably have good days and not so good, but at least I know this isn't some big thing.

I think you now have a different "mind-set" and the bossy mare senses it.
You made the "aggressive" move ON YOUR TERMS.
You confronted "boss mare"...

You must earn and keep that respect from all those animals to safely handle one {yours} each and every time you enter that pasture/paddock area...

Don't back down ever....get BIG & UGLY that the horse actually blinks like "what have I done" if or when she challenges you....
Be prepared to back up your "attitude" with a reprimand swiftly and instantly in response to a challenge...

when I catch my horse she does the same. Always take a friend with you for back up! Bring treats for your horse to come to and reward her when she does. If necessary get your friend to attract the other horses to the other part of the field so you can get away without fuss
