I live in California and we have zero pasture. We have what I call the geriatric barn all the horses are 17 to 24. We feed free choice orchard grass hay to everyone but the 24 yr old gets an extra flake of alfalfa at night. Also everyone gets a 1.5 lbs of equine senior with platinum performance.

I Was Wrong

I know in my mind now I wasn't feeding that much Oats, simply because it actually might have been a 1 pound coffee can.Yea I enjoyed the answers and will try out the Alfalfa pellets and definitely grass hay. What a great group, thanks all yall for a very great read!! Larry

My TB is a really good keeper but at this moment is he mostly just living off of his paddock but he gets a small amount of pellets and lucerne everyday just for his biotin supplement and when I take him out on rides which is 3 days a week he gets more but that's about it...

24/7 access to grass, mixed round bale, free choice minerals, an about a quart of Purina Strategy twice a day

My guy is currently on 24/7 pasture with complete access to a mineral/salt rock.
Next month he'll be fed 20-25lbs of grass/alfalfa mix, complete access to a mineral/salt rock, and 4 oz of U-Gard. He has access to water at all times

Never forgot the horse that taught you to be fearless (Braveheart RIP) the horse that taught you to stay strong no matter how bumpy the road is (Caesar) and the horse that always had to test gravity by throwing you in the air (Cali)

I feed my horse 3 pounds of progressive nutrition (1 1/2 cup standard formula 1 1/2 cup low carb) I HIGHLY recommend this feed if you are looking for one... quality feed. It is healthier for a horse to get as my forage as possible rather than feed. I only use feed to supplement his diet.

My OTTB is boarded and I honestly don't know their feeding schedule
But my Paint lives at home, she's a super easy keeper. A flake of 3 way in the morning and a flake of alfalfa at night. Neither of my horses get oats, grain, bran mash, grass, etc.
They're also both on MSM. The OTTB is on a joint supplement and the Paint gets Psyllium the first week of every month.

c'est la vie

My horse has 24/7 access to pasture grass + adlib grass hay in summer, and 24/7 adlib grass hay in winter, is never stalled and gets a handful of whole oats with his supplements a day. Plus a salt block, of course.

I have come a long way, to surrender my shadow to the shadow of my horse.
