Well you know I'm not an expert from my other posts! But I have found a saddle I really like. I first bought a used leather western saddle... but my mare's back was so short and straight, that it just didn't fit her right. So I decided to try an Abetta synthetic after reading a lot of good comments even from endurance riders. It was inexpensive enough that I didn't worry too much about trying it.. I found it on sale new for just over $300. It fit my horse great when I had her, and now it fit's my friend's tank of a quarter horse plenty well enough for the riding I do. Not sure how it can fit both horses since their builds are so different, but the knowledgeable horse people in my life have checked the fit for me and say it's good. It's really light weight (under 20 pounds) which is a bonus.

Anyway, that's my working solution for now... waiting to find the right horse before starting the search for the perfect beautiful leather saddle that fits us both.

Harley seems like a gem! How pretty. Congrats, and enjoy.

Is there a friend you could borrow or lease (for a small fee) a saddle from until you have your new horse? If you were in Idaho, I have a few extra.... haha

I love that you went out on the trail! My girlfriends barrel racing horse was acting out, as well as her mom's, we took them out on the trail, and the next weekend they won! From then on she alternated every other weekend taking one of their barrel racing horses out on the trail, as I did my reining horse. Great for their minds, as well as ours!

I trail ride in a dressage saddle, that's what's most comfortable for me. I used to have a County Competitor that I loved, but unfortunately needed to eventually admit that while it fit my horse great, it was too small for me. I still keep an eye on EBay and FB tack trader pages for my old saddle in my size. The brand new or custom County's can be expensive, but there are so many older models out there at really good prices.

I think the advice about borrowing a few saddles, different brands/styles, is a good idea to figure out what you want.

Thanks for your suggestions. The BO offered me her synthetic English saddle to use whenever I wanted. We tried it on Harley and it seems to fit him fine. So I will try it once or twice to see how I like it. We are also going out of town next weekend and will have the opportunity to go to a saddlery. Around here, there are very few saddles, even new, that I can look at and I'm very hesitant to buy something online. I'd like to at least sit on it.
