Helping finding records for my standardbred!

Hey there!

I wasn't sure where to post this as I'm new to the forum, but I am not new to horses or horse ownership. I have a Standardbred named Jackson that I've owned for approx 6 years. I bought him when I moved to Charleston, SC and was told that he is an ex-trotter. I don't have any records for him and the person I bought him from didn't have any records or registration papers either. He does have a lip tattoo though (maybe that's some help?)! I am super interested in finding out if I can see if he actually raced at all, or what his pedigree is.

His name is Jackson. Lip Tattoo: G299? (the last digit is unreadable, but I can try to look again) Colour: Chestnut. Markings: Star. Age: 28

I've checked on USTA's tattoo lookup, and didn't have any luck there. Can anyone help me?? I really appreciate it!

Most of the Standys I've seen here in the Midwest have the freeze brand on the neck instead of a lip tattoo-interesting that they go both ways!

Looks like you are going to try to decipher the last number of his tattoo to get any help from the USTA. They can only pull compete numbers.

Here's what was quoted:

"A Standardbred tattoo always has five characters, either a letter and four numbers or two letters and three numbers. The first letter in the tattoo indicates the year of birth"'

The G definitely confirms his age though!

Good luck!

Thanks Chasin Ponies!! I'll definitely take another look at his lip tattoo. And that is super interesting that it can go both ways! I think I remember the lady I bought him from telling me that it's possible he was bred in Canada. I reached out to her to see if she had any more on him.

I'll see what I can find and report back! Thank you much!!

Also may try to get a picture of the tattoo. Maybe some of the keen eyes on here can help you figure it out. More eyes are better then just two sometimes :)

I can't believe I didn't think of that! I'll definitely take a picture tomorrow (since when I get back to the barn tonight it'll be too dark) and hopefully someone who has better eyes than me might have better luck!

Might also check out the FB groups on harness racing, as many of them are still plugged into associations and could maybe check for you.

Horses make me a better person.
