Talking Hoof Handling Breakthrough!! :)

Hey everybody!! My 2 yr old Remy who I've had for a month now is now letting me picking up and clean out and hold his feet!!! When I bought him, his hooves were in terrible condition because they never trained him to let his feet be picked up for the farrier. :( :( I paid a very strong very patient farrier and got his feet trimmed, but poor Remy hated it and kept wheeling away from him. So for the entire first month, every day, I've been giving lots of love and touching his legs a lot. He was praised at first for just getting weight off that foot I was tapping, and then praised for lifting for a moment, and then praised for holding, then praised for letting me be the one to let his foot fall, then stopped and backed up when he'd try to walk out of it. Now, he will let me pick up any of his feet as long as I'm slow and calm and start at his butt or shoulder and slide my hand down! :) I'm so proud of him!!! Also, he's now leading fine on a lead rope with me (except at obstacles, that's what we are working on) and comes to me when I approach the paddock! And I'm teaching him the commands of trot and walk and whoa and he's doing great! So proud! Sorry haha just wanted to share!! :) Have a blessed day and good luck with all your new and old horses! <3

Often it is a case of being persistent and consistent.
One thing...it is best to set the hoof back down and not drop it.
Good work. It sounds like you are making progress.

Thanks! Yeah I only drop it when it's an accident because he turns away. in which case I back him up and keep trying to pick up the foot til he's willing, then I put it down.
