When "Microsoft" called I suddenly got hysterical and told them I tho't they were the funeral home calling, that my husband was dead on the floor. The guy was so apologetic I had to stifle the laughter. Never been called back.

long time ago I was selling a 4 year old non reg paint gelding, he was a rescue pony so I bought him, got weight put on to him, got him trained, and put him for sale..

And a Paul Garza was really interested in him, same thing terrible English, certain things didn't seem normal "your horse is really my taste" like do you plan on eating him?..
he was talking about sending a hauler to get him in which he'd pay me extra so when he showed up I could give the hauler the extra money he sent me blah blah blah...
I finally started doing some research and sure enough his name came up with a lot of people advertising that he's a scammer.. so I was a little confused as to how buying something from me would be a scam, me buying something from him was easily understood, but some how when he'd send this cheque it gave him some access to your account when trying to deposit it.. so prior to me finding out the info I had told him my mailing address for him to send the cheque (young and stupid) and when I received it I killed myself laughing.. It was a printed out fake cheque that looked like It was done on photoshop, never heard of the bank before and I was dealing with this Paul guy yet the signature was "Lily Lemon" like seriously? lol..
I finally emailed him back, after reading all the stuff on the internet and getting this fake cheque and told him I knew he was a scammer and that he was wasting my time, I'm pretty sure I told him some other stuff lol.. and got a email back from him telling me, that he sent me this cheque and if I didn't deposit it he was going to get the cops involved, so I told him to go ahead cause we both knew it was a scam and he'd be doing me a favor by getting them involved and he sent me a couple other threats finally I told him I had enough and was going to send his info along with the emails to my law enforcement and then I never heard another word out of him.

I probably wouldn't have ever gone as far as I did communicating with him, but my family was convinced it was legit, right from his first email I knew he wasn't a typical horse lover.. so I learned two things, don't listen to those around you and listen to your gut.. I was right from the get go with that guy, yet I listen to those around me and almost got myself into trouble!

The big scam I see on my CL is horse trailers and small compact tractors for sale. Who in their right mind would think a 2009 JD compact tractor, in immaculate condition, would sell for $2209? What's the $9 for as well? It used to be that phone #s were a giveaway but anymore people keep their cell numbers from all corners of the country. The palm trees in the background are another story. Last time I checked, they don't do too well in my neck of the woods. Some times I will get a bug up my butt and spend an hour flagging every ad our there (and the puppy ones too). The sad part is I've had friends convinced they were legit and wanted me to go look at a horse trailer with them. Really? You we're born yesterday.

I have had scammers contact me about saddles before. The second they say "I'm interested in your item," I delete the email or text. If you can't tell me what my "item" is that you're interested in, I don't have time for you.

I did almost fall for a scammer a few years ago when I was selling my wedding dress. Lady had me all ready to sell her my dress for her daughter and then she started talking about shipping and money orders and I said "I'm not comfortable shipping it, especially if it doesn't fit her." Never heard back from her after that.

Awkward phrasing that shows lack of understanding of the horse world but is close enough that you could see how someone tried to copy the tone of something else they'd read (i.e., "the mother line;" "very easy to ride under the saddle" or "friendly...with other pets." I tried to really hard to figure out what "predicate mares" is supposed to mean but that one still has me stumped.
3. I don't see a price or shipping offer in this one, but the description is generally phrased along the lines of a "too good to be true" type horse-without more concrete details or pictures of this one in a million boy "under the saddle" I would definitely not give it a second thought.
Spelling mistakes are common in adverts when they've been typed out and fired in without checking - and the 'blurb' on this horse was barely any different to what you see on hundreds of horses advertised - very few people describe the horse as 'terrible to ride, hates traffic, ugly as sin etc - you want to sell your horse you make it sound wonderful - one in a million!!
The use of 'mother' made it sound as if it had been translated from a non-English language
Predicate or Ster Predicate is an acknowledgement that the horse has passed certain requirements that give it a 'quality' standard

I often see horse trailers on CL, Sundowner or other nice trailers listed for a very low $ amount. When I see them I tick the scam icon and they go away.

Whenever I reply to a CL ad I always put in the subject line "Not Spam, replying to (I put exactly what I am replying to here). Then in the body of the email I always tell them a little about me so that the person I am replying to really understands that I a just a regular person.

Just because an advertiser can use words you don't know, doesn't make them a scammer. Just means they know stuff you don't.

I think the best approach is to research the seller or the horse - if you can
Never buy unseen - use an agent if you can't go yourself
Have PPE's done
Ask to see all papers and documents, veterinary records etc
Be sure the seller actually owns the horse
Never part with cash or card details before the horse is on your property
I'm sure there are others that someone else can add to that
