Just Getting In

Hey everyone! So I just started getting back into horses. I've grown up around them though at about age 13, I lost interest. Of course it was always daily maintenance and a good ole ride with my grandpa, never anything serious.
Reason I'm getting back into it, my girlfriend is attending Monty Roberts internship and before she left, I really got interested again. I don't think I want to get into it as deep as her - since it's her life and career, not mine - I do want to become more educated, give me something to do while she's gone.

Though as a complete beginner, what should I start on? I don't mind doing the research, but just having trouble on where to start!

Thank you,
Zack.

I suggest you look into Clinton Anderson. His training methods and advice about horse behavior is great and easy to absorb.
Clydesdales likes this.

“When I bestride him, I soar, I am a hawk: he trots the air; the earth sings when he touches it; the basest horn of his hoof is more musical than the pipe of Hermes. ” ~ William Shakespeare

I also suggest Warwick Schiller
He believes in forms of natural horsemanship (similar to Monty Roberts) and he is really easy to understand.

I would love to know what all your girlfriend is doing in that internship and how she likes it. I would be interested in it, but wasn't sure if it was worth the money. It seems like an amazing opportunity.

parelli is also quite good. Just be sure you don't get sucked into buying expensive gear or "special rope" or something. a lot of natural horseman and women use similar methods but with different names. Maybe check out some youtube videos of these different people. Don't just stick to one brand or something or follow something just because such and such said so. do your research and then figure out what makes sense to you and the horses and yeah. have fun :)

Hard to look into Clinton Anderson since my girlfriend is so pro Monty! :P. Of course if I get into it more, I'll research multiple methods.

@Cimarron, my girlfriend loves the Monty Roberts program. She's built up the last 2 years just to get to this internship. She did her advanced testing a few months ago, in June. When she's free, I can see if I can have her PM you and explain it to you.

@Lia and Midnight, yes I definitely will not rush into buying any expensive gear. If and when I do buy anything, I'll take my girls advice on that part. I'll start my research on some methods and continue my youtube videos :)

Thank you for the advice so far!
