If you just want to get the basics of riding then go ahead and start with the instructor you have lined up. If you want to do western right off then find a different instructor.

Definately get a good helmet either way. Buy used paddock boots and half chaps if possible and you can wear work out tights to ride in. But you dont want to wear jeans for english. It's not going to be confortable.
