Portland is really lovely. I just spent a week and a half there on business. I'd love to live there. I think it has a pretty high cost of living, but I've never looked in to living there with any seriousness. IMO that would be the main drawback. I can't think of a lot of others.

almost got to meet foxtail ranch in person, but the plans fell through

I'm sure it depends on how close to the city and what creature comforts you're used to, but I don't consider the Portland area very high cost. There's a very lovely area just NW of the city that's still zoned rural and has amazing territorial views... and that area is certainly expensive. Not long ago I was drooling over a 10 acre horse farm in that area (complete with that really nice looking white fencing, indoor arena, etc.) that was listed at right around $1M. No way I could afford that But if you're willing to go a little further out (still talking within 30 minutes driving to downtown) you can get some really good deals.

At the moment I'm fantasizing about a 13 acre hobby farm just down the street from where I currently board that's right off a multi-purpose state park trail. It's listed at $324k (though there's probably something wrong with it because it's been listed for a while now )
