My 1-year anniversary of riding lessons. Hooray!

This is just a silly celebration thread. One year ago today, I had my first lesson at my barn. Here's what I've accomplished so far (not bad for a 45 year old mom of a bunch of kids, eh?):

  1. I can lead a horse properly without fear of injury or death.
  2. I can walk and trot really well and do all the transitions in between.
  3. I can canter decently on a horse that is notoriously uncomfortable to ride. I can canter well on a smooth-riding horse.
  4. I can clean out hooves and treat them for thrush, trim off frog tags, and know when to call out the farrier.
  5. I can train a horse to stand still for mounting and grooming.
  6. I can trim a mane and tail evenly.
  7. I can administer medications orally.
  8. I can calm a nervous horse.
  9. I can insist on and receive respect from a pushy horse.
  10. I can tack up a horse. (should have put that first)
  11. I can shower a horse and treat it for mites.
  12. I can go on trail rides without being afraid I'm going to die.
  13. I can put a pretty running braid in a mane.
  14. I can ride out a spin and run spook.
  15. I can ride out a buck during a canter.
  16. I can fall in love with a 12 year old mare who treats me like gold.
I can also:
  1. Forget to tighten a cinch and end up on my back in the dirt next to my horse as the saddle swings gently from his belly.
  2. Squirt liquid wormer into my own face. Twice.
  3. Break all the hairs off the bottom half of my horse's mane by holding on with a death grip while learning to canter.
  4. Fall off my horse while trying to mount bareback, landing on the rails.
  5. Get a face-full of liquid manure/**** water when my horse stomps a loose floor pad that harbors that unholy gunk under it.
I consider my year a WIN!

When I bestride him, I soar, I am a hawk: he trots the air; the earth sings when he touches it; the basest horn of his hoof is more musical than the pipe of Hermes. ~ William Shakespeare

Sounds like a successful riding year to me!

Keep up the good work, and stay away from the loose floor pads. ;)
