My guess is they are not broke because they had some issues handling them. If you are not experienced I would advise against them.

yup, regardless of not being broke at 9, my assumption is that they have not been separated in a LONG time = serious buddy sour issues. I have started and ridden many horses, and own two (one whom I did 100% of the training, the other I have done most of the miles and training under supervision of another trainer/friend), and I would not even be comfortable dealing with two horses with buddy issues at this point.
