Need advice on horse care

I have been riding and helping at my local riding stables, I recently got a horse on loan but it is the first loan I have had. I am just looking for a bit of advice on the best way to care for a horse.

I think we need a bit more information to help I'm afraid! What horse do you have? Are they DIY/at boarding stables? Will they be mainly living out or coming in? What do you want to do with the horse and what do you already know? Lots and lots of good books out there to help! :)

I am loaning him from a riding school, so I pay a certain amount each week, i have to go twice or more a week and I can ride him, take him to shows. I have responsibility for looking after him, grooming him, making sure he is healthy etc. but the staff at the riding school help to look after him. Unfortunately he can't jump much and dressage is not my favourite, so i will just be doing light riding. He lives out in the summer and comes in in the winter

How exciting for you! I think your main job is to love on him, get to know him & let him teach you. The school should be able to help you with any concerns.

Look into Hunter Hack, Hunter Under Saddle and Hunt Seat Equitation as classes you could show him in I am assuming from your post he is familiar with English type riding). I have even seen classes where a horse is cantered over a jump-type course of rails lying on the ground (no jumping). He will love having a person to care for him and groom him and you will learn so much!
