NEW Aria update!

Hey Guys,

I wanted to start a new thread on Aria, the green-ish horse Im leasing.

I worked with a new trainer this past weekend, and made so much progress!!!!

This trainer is WAY better than the previous one I tried. Im lunging Aria confidently now. Now I understand why I do things like back her up and doing circles... Unfortunatly, Aria is still stiff when it comes to trotting. So Im working her at a walk when its just me and her. But I hope to see if maybe the vet can give us painkillers so I can have the craniosacral person work more deeply on Arias hips.

Some days her hips are fine, and others, shes stiff. But she is becoming such a good girl.

Shes a bit hot. And also a bit naughty. But Im getting more confident all the time. If I can get a good handle on her physical state, I really think I may someday ride her!

(Likely at a walk, since I, too, have back and hip problems. LOL)

Anyway, Im just so excited to have broken through my issue with Aria turning in on me when lunging.

Onward!

Congrats! That 'making progress' feeling is the best, isn't it? I'm glad you found a good trainer, it makes all the difference.

I'm curious as to how your new trainer helped you change the 'turning in when lunging' problem.

Well, the original trainer had me working aria in really small circles, so I could change her direction easily. But that meant she turned in a lot, and didnt see why she couldnt just turn.

This trainer had me push aria out into larger circles, so when shed start to turn in, I could shake the carrot stick (or in my case, stick with ribbons attached) to the side of her face/shoulder. The stimulus makes her want to turn away, so she goes back to going the right direction.

Arias biggest issue lunging was that she hadnt been taught enough how to go left. So was really rusty on that side.

MY issue was that small circles with rapid direction changes was fine when getting a horse to arch around you. But for regular lunging, it didnt give me enough room to signal aria properly.
