New Guy Here!

Hello Everyone....New guy to horses and to the forum. Here to gather knowledge from everyone. About to get my first horse it looks like. My soon to be wife has had horses, shown them and been around them forever but has been out of it for sometime but she wants to get back into it. I never thought I would be able to have one and I am stoked that it is a possibility. A friend of hers boards, trains and shows horses and has an older Arabian (about 25) he said I can have for free if I just take over the boarding cost (the horse was basically abandoned there) and he gave me a great deal on the boarding. Basically covering the cost of the feed.....I would have access to him whenever I want......The horse is very healthy, very friendly and seems to be a good horse for me to learn on and get some experience. So, looks like after the holidays are over, I am going to go for it! Stoked!

Welcome to the forum! Congratulations! Get lessons! Riding is not something naturally picked up by most adults.

Good luck and welcome to the forum! Soak in everything you can but don't drink any one flavor of koolaid. It sounds like you have surrounded yourself with knowledgeable people and picked a great first horse!

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I had Arabs and Arab/crosses until I couldn't sit the trot. I went to Tennessee Walkers 26 years ago but my heart still skips a beat for an Arab --- especially the older ones.

It is an unwritten rule that pictures of the horse must soon follow:) :)

I CAN'T ride 'em n slide 'em. I HAVE to lead 'em n feed 'em Thnx cowchick77.

Welcome to the forum and to the world of horses!

It sounds like a great situation for you and the horse both if he is a good horse for a beginner. Having a job can also be wonderful and keep an older horse fitter as he ages. Has your wife ridden him at all?

I would have him checked out by a vet even if he is free - that way if he has any health problems or needs any special care to stay sound (ride-able), you will know up front and have a plan of attack.

Arabians can be a real joy to learn from, especially one that has done a lot!

Thanks everyone. I don't think this horse is going to be one I can ride. And that is fine with me right now. I figure in a couple years we will hopefully have a place where we can board at home, then I will think about getting a rider. My girl had him out longing (sp?) him and he was doing ok with it. I got to try longing with a different horse that is very well trained and I was really enjoying it. This horse will strickly be for me to get used to caring for him and learning how to handle horses. He is very mellow and friendly and has seen it all over the years....

I will certainly post pics when and if we get him.....My girl is still in the debating stage but she told me to go for it if I really want to and I am leaning that way. Just want to get through the holidays and then go spend some more time with him and work out the details.

My first horse that was all my own was an older mare in her 20's, retired from movies. These senior horses have so much to teach us!

Welcome!
