Another vote for weighted split reins here. For trail riding and general training I usually use my split reins. Last pair I bought were Rockin' SP Split Reins- Tie End from SmartPak. Love them! Not a fan of the roper/barrel reins, but actually have a pair for people who cannot ride with split reins.

Sometimes, if I am riding in the bridle, I'll use my romal reins. But that is not the norm for trail riding. I also will sometimes use my hackamore (bosal), it has a horse hair mecate on that.

Use what you feel comfortable with. They all work for trail riding.
