Padding

I'm planning on getting a gel pad in the future but until then I have a normal pad and a blanket. I'd like to use both just for a little extra padding but which do I put on first, pad or blanket

Why on earth do you want to use 2 pads and a blanket? It can throw off your saddle fit completely. If the saddle fits so poorly you need that much padding, it's time to look for a new saddle. Pad first, then blanket, unless you're just using the blanket to keep the pads clean (like a pad liner).

I don't think she's using two pads and a blanket. I think she's using one pad and a blanket until she gets the new pad.

With saddle blankets, many western riders cause problems by over padding. I suggest you read the following article before deciding what to use.

Only using one pad and one blanket. I'm going to get a gel pad in the future to replace both.

Gel pads are all well and good but, I bought gel shoe liners for myself and they were useless!

If you have pressure points on the saddle then the gel moves away from those points allowing them to press hard. That is what I discovered with the inner soles.

The same is true of gel wheelchair cushions and gel saddle pads. But it is hard to go up against aggressive marketing. People just don't want to believe it.

I had a gel pad at one time that was fairly solid and the gel did not move. What I didn't like about it was that it was hot and did not allow the horses back to breathe, causing a buildup of heat. I'm sure it was great for reducing pressure but I quit using it because of the heat issue.

Sit on a gel tush-cush for awhile and see how you like it. (Sweaty-butt :-) Then save your money for a Supracor pad.
I don't use a saddle blanket. Horse, pad, saddle. Cool and comfortable.
That said, the 5-Star felt pads are very nice, but they will change the way a saddle fits, and the thicker the pad, the more effect it has.
