Its usually classed as a conflict of interest to use the same vet for a PPE as the seller uses
I would think asking your vet if they know anyone would be a good start - I don't think it matter that the owner knows the vets - its just not ideal to use their current one
The owners of the last two horses I've bought were happy to pass on various reports to me and to give their vets permission to share X rays

I scheduled the PPE for Tuesday! It was originally supposed to be a couple days ago, but I had to cancel due to an unexpected emergency.

Anything in particular I should have done during the PPE? Any specific questions I should ask seller before taking the plunge and taking him home for a 2 week trial?

Should I get xrays even if everything else checks out fine? We are doing a very thorough exam (including vet watching how he moves under saddle), but I'm only planning on getting xrays if he is suspicious of any of his legs. Is that a bad move? They don't have digital xrays because it is a very small town and not many people demand xrays so they haven't bothered to upgrade...so if one of the shots doesn't come out well I have to pay the trip charge plus the fee for another xray however many times it takes.

If it is an inexpensive horse and the X-rays would cost more than the cost of the horse, I typically will just go with the exam, unless of course there is anything questionable. Keep in mind that IMO it is the vets job to find "something". No horse is prefect. It is also their job to help you sort out if that is a deal breaker or not.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
