Unhappy Riding situation - I can't!

I have a problem. My school finishes at 4:00pm (groan ) and by this time it is dark outside. I get home from school at around half 5 and by that time it is pitch black.

The horses are often out in a small sand-paddock (as they are permanently stabled during winter) and so we complete any jobs that have to be done before bringing them in. Dusty gets her legs flicked down with a brush, hooves picked and her light-weight rug switched to her medium rug. If I have more time she also has a groom.

She is ridden at least once a week (and again twice on the weekends) but because we have no arena (yet) and there is no lighting on the one I use at the weekend I barely ever get to enjoy riding her anymore! She doesn't hack very well so it's only really a 2 minute walk and trot down the lane and on the weekends not much more, as she is very unfit (she had sarcoids removed and has been off work).

Can anyone suggest what I could do to be able to hack her properly or at least get to ride more. Thanks.

Are there any local indoor arenas that you can hire?
Once Christmas is over the days will begin to get longer again, try not to get too downhearted x

Winter sucks when it comes to riding for the most part, IMO. I work until 4:30 M-F & I barely get any ride time in during the week anymore. My barn feeds earlier in the winter too, so that also affects my ride time. I feel your pain.
If I do get to ride after work during the week, it's a roughly 30mins to MAYBE an hour if I'm lucky. So I mostly ride on the weekends right now.

It's definitely frustrating. Winter will be over before you know it, & the sun won't go down as early. I hate it too!

Ride more, worry less.

Have you thought about trying to get a ride in before school? During the winter I often prefer to ride before heading to work, it helps me get up and moving for the rest of the day as well.

In the UK at the moment it's pretty much dark until about 7:30 AM which is almost school time anyway!

Surely the Christmas holidays are coming up soon? I feel your pain!

Winter can be hard. I loathe the whole concept of "Daylight Saving Time" -- ha, more like daylight wasting time. If the clocks hadn't changed, I'd still have that hour in the evening. For a while I was able to go ride before my afternoon classes, but once the work load started piling up, I had too much to do and too little time to do it. At least the semester is over and I'm starting winter break, that should give me some breathing room.

Chin up, the days will be getting longer again before you know it.

Do you have an area to ride in like an outdoor ring or paddock? If so, you can get shop lights and set one or two up to light the area. I recall hearing a story about how Spruce Meadows, way back, uses to have cars on the perimeter of their ring to light up the area for classes that ran late.

I definitely feel for you on the dark - I work 35-40 minutes from where I board, and by the time I get out of work it's dark. And I have a brand-new horse that needs training!

I'm trying to console myself with the fact that the days will start getting longer again after Christmas, and for now my horse is enjoying being a wild, fuzzy, fat mammoth in the field with his buddies during the day.

Unfortunately none within a half-an-hour journey. It's a good suggestion though, and once her fitness is up after Christmas; an option I will definitely be grabbing with both hands! It's just getting her fit aha.
