Silly question: can horses shrink?

My mare was a bit "fluffy" when I got her but not overweight. She isn't thin now but I get a feeling that her barrel has somehow shrunk.

Either that or my legs are growing - at 40, I should have that looked at.

Are they like us, getting svelte without loosing weight? And, does it happen so that a rider might feel the difference? I mean, we sit mostly over their ribcage which can't really get svelte. Am I imagining this? Maybe I changed my position somehow so it feels different. It feels like there is less horse under me and my legs dangle a bit under her and I don't remember that being the case.

Told you all, it's a silly question

I don't know for sure, but I guess it's possible. I agree that her ribs couldn't have gotten smaller, but maybe it's a difference in weight or muscle distribution? This is interesting, but yeah, you might be sitting different too.

This is an interesting thought! :)

Don't judge someone's horse or skill because they don't compete or work with a trainer.

Sometimes they're the most in tune with each other.

Weight and muscle loss/gain can change their feel. Sometimes I find I suddenly notice something about my horse that was always there, but I'm just noticing it now.

Fun Fact: A horse's thoracic sling isn't connected to their axial skeleton. That means it can change with muscle and fitness. They can get taller and shorter based on that specific muscle's development(but it really not that much, but it's cool)

Maybe your hips have loosened up, so your legs CAN hang down more.
Foxhunter likes this.

Riders ask "How?" Horsemen ask "Why?"
