Spring fever?

Hi, my horse has become really skittish and scared of everything. He's just bolted twice today whilst riding him, which is really unusual as if he normally gets spooked I can calm him down by talking to him, but the last few days he's felt tense the whole time as if in a constant state of readiness to bolt.

He's turned out 24/7, his current field is full of lush green grass and the weather is also getting a lot warmer so someone suggested that his behaviour could be down to spring fever? If it is what can I do to help him and make our rides more enjoyable for the both of us?

Thanks!

Spring grass is loaded with sugar - its like feeding a child free choice candy bars and wondering why they're suddenly hyperactive
Try to restrict the grazing with a muzzle, strip grazing, stabling or a dry lot part of the day or night
It will also reduce risks of laminitis which you also see cases of rise a huge amount at this time of year
walkinthewalk and avrajack like this.

Thanks Jaydee, I'll start rationing his grass from now on and see if that makes a difference.

If you're not relaxed you body is sending messages that there's something to worry about. Try taking several deep breaths and really push them out. This will relax you and help him.
