Teach him a constant cue, the more you practice it the longer he'll learn to stay down ( make sure its in short intervals) , i taught my horse to bow on one leg, and my mini horse to bow and kneel and lay down.

It takes time for them to get there.

Try picking his leg up and asking him to back up a step, and if he downs down even a little bit reward him with either praise or a treat.

You can also pick up his leg and show him the treat to see if he will bow

Thanks everyone who replied! I especially enjoyed reading little debates on training techniques

I've decided to start from the top with my horse, but reading everyone's suggestions was extremely helpful!

Oh and on that note:

My Arab mare gives kisses for treats, and up until today it was basically a trick. You ask for the kiss, she stretches her neck out and wiggles her nose across your face. Cute, huh?

I had separated her from the boys and put her back in an adjoining paddock .. by herself. It's been a couple weeks, I guess. Today, after breakfast, when I was going in to clean the paddock, she met me at he gate and gave me kisses. I didn't have any treats. So I started to love on her.

She moved 3 steps away from me, rattled the gate, came back and gave me kisses again. Then repeated 2 or 3 more times. She wanted out of the paddock and back with the boys. I swear, if she could talk....

What could I do? I went and got her halter, .. and put her back out with the boys.
