Timing of pre-purchase exam

I've found a horse that I might want to buy. I liked him on the initial ride, and my trainer and I are scheduled to go out for her to evaluate him this coming Tuesday. I made an offer which was accepted, all contingent on her evaluation and results of a PPE.

My concern is the exam. I know it's customary for the buyer to be present at the exam. I don't think I want to schedule it for Tuesday, though, because my trainer might very well decide he isn't the horse for me (or I might decide that, based on how he behaves with her). I can't see spending money to do a vet check on a horse I've already decided not to buy. Is it customary for all of this to be done at the same time or will it be reasonable for me to do this in two visits? I might be hard pressed to find a vet who can come out on short notice, so this may be a moot point, anyway. Just wondering what others do.

I do know what to expect and what to ask for and the kinds of tricks sellers will pull; been reading a lot about that, just don't see information about timing of these things. Thanks for your help!

I think it'd be reasonable to do it in two visits, as long as they aren't too far apart. Good luck!

Do not tell me I can't...because I will show you that I can.

I would tell the seller at my trainer's visit, after she has indicated her good opinion of him, that I'd schedule a PPE as soon as I could and I'd let her know the minute I had an appointment. If your trainer indicates that he's not for you, I'd also let the seller know that ASAP too, it's only fair not to tie the horse up any longer than you have to. Have you put a deposit down on the horse? I ask this only because when I am selling, even with an accepted offer, if you have not put down a deposit I will not hold the horse. If you have put down a deposit, if he fails the trainer's ride and/or the PPE, then I refund the deposit right then. If you just back out, then the deposit stays with the seller. Otherwise, she/he is within their right to sell to someone with cash in hand.

I haven't put a deposit down on him. If she sells him, that's fine. I'll keep looking. I doubt she will though; she said that four or five people had been out to see him and none of them wanted to work with him, had a trainer, or were taking lessons. As she put it, they all just wanted to stick him in their backyard so they could jump on him whenever and yell, "Yee-haw!" So I'm the first offer they've even considered.

Thanks everyone. I just wanted to make sure this wouldn't be an unusual request or a surprise to anyone :)

This covers it all really well, including deposit handling..

I'd call now and make an appointment for a PPE on a date after your trainer sees the horse. Then if all goes well tell them you arranged the PPE for x day. If it doesn't go well don't tell the owners about the PPE, refuse the sale then call up your vet and cancel.

I don't want to schedule it for a day they won't be there. I think I can wait a week. It probably won't take longer than that to get a vet out.

The only issue with that is to make sure she won't be charged something for cancelling. Where vets are scarce and appts can be hard to come by, that's been happening more and more.
