Too old to compete?

I just started riding this year, and I'm lucky enough to have two great horses to work with. Lately I've been hoping to mix up our exercise some (something about riding the same trails every day is getting old, probably for all of us!) and add some low level jumps (2' 6" and under). I have some design ideas, but I'm worried they may be too old for that high impact of an activity. They are both about 20, still pretty out of shape, and neither have ever jumped before. I can't afford a trainer so any advice/opinions are welcome!

I think if the horse is sound, and in shape There's no reason they cant. My horse competed in 1.30m jumpers well into 19. He started to slow down a bit, so I retired him from higher competition and leased him to a younger rider who showed up to 2'6 till he was 24. He's now fully retired, sound, to pasture to just live out the rest of his years as a horse.
