Trading mare for mini help.

I am letting my friend/ex take my horse. I'm not giving her to him but since I can't ride his little sister is gonna take Hunter out to the barn. A ride her for six weeks since she's going insane in her pen without exercise. (Sprained my ankle again! So can't do much with her, not that she will come near me anyways with my crutches) for the six weeks I'll have their blue roan mini at my house feeding it and stuff. They r gonna put Hunter in with their pregnant mare. Honestly don't think it's a good idea for them to do that. But hunter Is submissive unless another horse is mean to her. The pen is safe for her to be in and we are making the switch Saturday. Any advice? I go insane without even seeing my mare for a week idk how I'm gonna do. should I make up a contract or something for the parents to sign? I'm getting her back at the end of the six weeks. How is she gonna cope? She loves me but had been real upset that I haven't ridden her lately or taken her out of her field like normal. ( getting home at dark normally now so I can't do much)

Yes, definitely have a clear cut contract that outlines all expectations as far as what care is expected, length of the lease, where the horse will be kept, and who is responsible for things like veterinary and farrier costs. A spoken agreement is well and good, but it is far better to have a written contract to fall back on if someone doesn't hold up their end of the deal.

Put everything on a written contract and get the parents to sign!

Yes, please do have a detailed contract for this transaction. If it were me, I'd consider this to be a free lease and use that kind of form with all the proper restrictions. They should probably also have one too for the mini as it will be your responsibility and you need to be protected if anything happens to it.

As you read these forums you will see how often these nice agreements between friends go wrong. You have to use extreme caution no matter how much you trust these people-things can go very bad in a hurry.

You can download a basic lease form on this site and then modify it to suit your needs-even reading a lease form will give you some ideas on how to handle the liability involved in letting someone else take over the care of your horse!
