The way that you train a trail horse is to first train the horse to ride at home in the arena. He should be very well trained and understand all cues. Then you take him on many rides. The first few go better if you have a seasoned trail horse along to baby sit.

Beating a horse bloody when she has no clue why you are doing it and no way to escape is training a horse to be an outlaw.

Some of the so called rescues are awful.

Thats absolutely nonsense. That is no form of training whatsoever other than being abusive and careless towards the poor mare. I don't understand how this lady could consider any type of training at all, that just sounds silly. She's obviously not a dominant mare or at least is not with that herd of 3. Glad you went in to check on her.
