3 year old male and female horses can run in the Triple Crown races.

In the derby a horse has to be qualified with enough points to be allowed to enter. So if a filly has enough points and the owner wants to race then she can.

Preakness and Belmont is if the owner wants to put the money up for the races.

No filly has won the Triple Crown.. only 12 have and all being male.

3 fillies have won the Kentucky Derby, but all together 39 fillies have raced in the derby.

53 fillies have ran in the Preakness with 5 being winners. The last one was in 2009 which was Rachel Alexandra.

22 fillies have ran in the Belmont with 3 being winners. The last one was Rags to Riches in 2007.

Fillies and Colts tend to be separated for racing to keep it fair. But if there comes an exceptional filly then they can be better then the boys. 2008 Eight Belles was a filly who cam in 2nd in the derby.

With the new points system it is FAR harder for fillies to get into the Kentucky Derby races. She has to accumulate enough points to get into the top 20 spots, and all of those points are allocated to the Derby prep races, which are generally male-only. So a filly would have to run early in her 3 year old year against males, and do quite well.

The Kentucky Oaks has a separate points system.

Which a filly could run against the males in the prep races but it's going to be quite rare. There's quite a few prep races , granted some of the races have lower points then the others. The Champagne, Holy Bull, withers and other races have less points then Santa Anita Derby, Florida Derby, Wood memorial, and others. But it can be done... just not highly likely.

With that being said the last filly to run in the Kentucky Derby was 2010 which was before the points system. So I agree it's going to be much harder for a filly to get in.

I was just informing the OP the fillies can run in the races.

Oh, I didn't think you weren't saying that! It was just a comment on the points system - which has its positives too.

Interesting!

The Epsom Derby has been run 236 times. Only sox fillies have won it, the last in 1916.

Fillies have their own race the Epsom Oaks. Over the same distance. Time comparisons are interesting.

Not counting times done by a stop watch as start and finish are in two different places. But recent times when the timers would be electronic, the fastest time was In 2010 in 2m 31.33 secs. Fillies, 2m 34.89 in the Oaks, this in many Derbys would have beaten the winner.

Not many fillies are entered for the Derby.
