Upset at the horse world today!

I guess this is just a bit of a rant. As some may know, I took a mare on loan last year, told not in foal, but was.
Then we recently took on rescue in the last month, 3 yrs old, in foal. We are building her up, giving her the feed and care she needs, and hopefully helping her through her foaling.
Today I took a friend to look at a mare from a rescue centre, she was in a bad state, but was 3 yrs old and had been born there. My friend is taking her on, and she will turn out to be a lovely mare. Its seems even the rescues arent really looking after them!
I know someone who has a mare in foal, who will not give her up, no matter how much we try, who will foal in a bog! All because she promised a friend she could have her, but she can only visit her 3 times a week! What are you to do? Foal stands no chance!
I despair at the situation. Why dont people just geld when needed to stop unwanted breeding? Are people really that stupid?
Im frustrated, and wish I could save more, as it seems to be such a huge problem. Why dont people love and look after horses as they are meant to be!?!? The world is wrong....so so woring :(

I feel your pain. And I feel exactly the same about people not spaying and neutering cats and dogs.

Maybe the rescue should be reported. It does not sound like they are "rescuing". Sometimes hoarders get a 501 (c) 3 designation to hoard under the guise of a non-profit rescue.

All I can say is that people are idiots. That's why I hang out with animals.

Could you offer to take the mare until she foals?

You'd be surprised at how resilient foals are. Our mare had her foal in the middle of hurricane Katrina in the middle of the swamp. When we went out to bring him home he was laying in 8 inches of water, bright and lively. She will have him in the safest place for him. Her instincts are strong.

I understand your frustration. The only thing I can say, and it won't do any good or make you feel any better, is that people aren't here to live up to your (or my) expectations. They aren't required to keep their horses as you or I would keep them. When they are sick, underfed and start looking really bad, sometimes you can get one given to you but frequently not. You have to just be grateful for the difference you can make for the horses you have.

I have, as have my close friends. She will not let her go.

The world is a crazy and upsetting place sometimes.

There are people who donít do right by their children and people who donít do right by their animals. Some people donít do right by themselves.

You canít save them all and if you try, you would soon find yourself in as bad of a situation as some of the people you were trying to save the animals from. Many a rescue has found themselves there. It hurts your heart, but it is the reality so you do as much as you can without becoming counterproductive.

Since she won't give them up, can you offer to go see the mare on the days where the owner canít be there so that at least someone might be around when she foals?

I hear you. Few things in the horse world frustrate me as much as irresponsible breeding. I actually think it is the number one thing wrong with the horse industry as a whole.

Unfortunately not. She is 50 miles away, and with work commitments, and the commitment to my own herd, I couldnt do a 100 mile around trip 4 days a week. I saved my mare from her already.
I did go in yesterday, and try to each time I am that way working, but its hard as its a 2.5 hr round trip.
