Any Doulas Here?

Hi there everyone, I was wondering if there are any Doulas here?
It looks like something that I would really enjoy doing but would like to see if I could get any 1st hand opinions? The good, the bad and the ugly.

Thank you!

I had a doula for my first and as it turned out only baby. She was a godsend. She cooked a little, did some light cleaning, watched the baby while I took naps, and generally supported me for the first couple weeks. She was great. I had a very unattached mother who was uninterested in my adventure in childbearing, and was one of the first of my friends to get pregnant so I really needed someone experienced in my corner.

Did you use your doula through the pregnancy as well?

I had a doula for my second birth. I knew from the first that my husband did not know how to be the sort of support that I would need. After the birth, she came to my house only once or twice to assist with breast feeding issues.

She was nice enough, though not all the personal. Very business-like. That's all I can tell you about my doula experience. I can say that my sister attended several births during her training in nursing (which she eventually left) and said it was an amazing experience. I think it helps tremendously if the doula has herself given birth. Until you do, you cannot truly imagine how it feels.

I had two through my pregnancy. Wouldn't trade the experience for the world. The first I hired. She was working with a midwife as that was her goal so I had the added benefit of that relationship. The second worked for the hospital. We're all still good friends. I've thought about going that route once my child graduates.

Some horse people change their horse, they change their tack and discipline, they change their instructor; they never change themselves.
