Oh my *$%^%$ damn! You people need to stop being so overly judgmental!!
I am NOT making them do a damn thing, they drink from the 'pond' when it rains for a few days and it fills. It is dry most of the time. They only drink from it when they are down at that end and don't want to hike back up the hill.
You people need to just stop! My horses do not drink a lot of water, period!!!

And how are we being judgmental? You asked for advice; we gave it to you. Check the water more. Its pretty simple. If you're feeling "judged" then you must have a guilty conscious.

You posted and asked for input - the ONLY person in this entire thread who is being rude is you.

Seriously secuono, you'd rather believe your mare has something metabolically wrong with her than think you're maybe not filling the troughs enough?

I'd be elated and have a lightbulb moment if someone suggested something as easy as just checking the water more often, not having a snit fit and declaring, 'my horses don't drink a lot of water, period!!!!'

Well, something's been drinking the water, so if it's not the horses and other livestock then just what do you think it is? Your mare hasn't been overdrinking, you've just not been filling the trough enough for her. Sames goes for the other livestock.

As I previously stated, my 3 horses drink at least 30 gallons a day, sometimes more. One horse can very well drink anywhere from 10 to 20 gallons a day, especially if the air is extremely dry. Which means your mare could easily empty your 100 gallon container in 5 days, much less several weeks.
THAT made sense.
Everyone else yelling and telling me this and that or what their horse drinks means nothing.

Air is dry= they drink more.
Didn't know that.

The troughs also refill when it rains, not fully, but sometimes 2-4in. And it's not that I am not checking them, I do glance over and most of the time, I pass them and can see there is a foot or more water in there. I was using the 50 as a timer, since so many animals drink from it. If she is drinking so much water that all the other animals aren't even done with 50g something is wrong with her. They have an auto refiller, but once it gets real hot, I take it off so I can dump and refill as needed and not waste 100g at a time.

You'd think, wouldn't you?

Overly dramatic much? Just where was everyong "yelling" at you?

I guess you'd have a real snit if I had the nerve to point out that failing to provide adequate, fresh water to your horses would qualify as neglect.......

Well, if you believe she's drinking far too much, then have the vet out and check her for Cushings/IR. It's certainly not out of the realm of possibilities, but I'm betting she's just drinking more because the air has been so dry.

As far as getting on you for not cleaning your troughs, meh. I don't clean mine as often in the winter, but I'm super anal about it in the summer. Plus, pond or stream water isn't going to kill them and some bacteria is good for their digestive systems.

Wow, I used to think this was a forum with members who have their heads on straight, but obviously you guys just like to spaz out.
Don't call me rude when you all are attacking me. That's a normal response to being attacked!

We told you what our horses drink because your horse is not getting enough water, pond or no pond. The trough should NEVER be empty. It should not take 4 weeks for a horse to drink 70gals. That is 2.5 gals a day. If she is only drinking that much I would have the vet called for her not drinking anything.

Maybe she drank a lot of water because it finally got filled and it was clean so she drank it?

Horses like clean water.

We stall the horses at night and if I top off their buckets with water, they will all drink between 1/4 and 1/2 of a bucket each. If I dump the buckets of water from the night before rinse and refill them, I will find 8 practically empty buckets the next day.

Same horses, same feed/hay, only difference is if the buckets get rinsed. So they all get rinsed...

Trying cleaning out your trough more often and I bet they will drink more.
