One rein stop confusion

This isn't a training question, really, so I put it here.

I'm working with my mare on braking. She's not awful, just a little dull so I'm trying to tune it up.

However, I have heard in emergency situations, the one reign stop works amazingly well. I'm just concerned that my horse could flip over? Is this a stupid concern? Is there a way to avoid it? I'm paranoid jerking my horse's head around with her inertia going forward would cause a flip. Can someone please explain this to me?

That's a very realistic fear, not paranoia. I don't see a one rein stop being of use except in cases where the horse is just starting to take off in a "bolt". You can derail them before they get going very fast. But, if you have a horse that is alreayd galloping, or even cantering, you have to circle down in a larger circle or use other methods to enforce a stop, such as the pulley rein.
There's a bunch of threads on this, if you do a search you might find some good ones.
