I'm really confused! I thought there were four inches in a Hand e.g. 16.1 16.2 16.3 17

Is this right or not because I keep on seeing things like 16.5 on other peoples threads, someone please un-confuse me! :D
Sorry if this is the wrong place to put it, I didn't know which to use.

There is no such thing as a 16.5 horse. The proper equivalent would be 17.1, as 16.4 would be 17. It is simply a common mistake that some people tend to make.

That is what I had thought so why do loads of people have 16.5? I have seen some of the experienced horse owners on this forum write it :s

When people say 16.5 for example think they are meaning 16 and 1/2 so they should be saying 16.2hh....that is how I always interpreted it....

but yes there is technically no such thing as 16.5.hh You can have a .1, .2, and a .3, but after that you must go up into the next hand i.e. 17hh.
