Hi -

Yesterday I noticed a crack/"hangnail" on my horse's hoof. I just bought him about a week ago and have no experience with bare-footed horses. What do you think? Call the farrier first thing tomorrow? Or should everything be okay until his next trim (2 weeks)?

No change in gait or signs of pain.
Kept mainly outside 24/7 in grass. Access to matted/straw stall.
Rainy Seattle area, yet we've been rain-free for about 10 days straight.
Is currently on "Farrier's Formula."

Thanks for any advice you can give!

Can you just rasp it off yourself? Just the end, so the crack wouldn't go higher if stepped on something. Then if you won't do that much riding you can wait for the next trim.

Such things happen on hard ground with stones etc, I just havn't seen so deep one.

It doesn't look bad....one of my horses hooves grow to fast for the ferrier to keep up with and hers often do that.i just break them off until he comes....or they fall off by themselves...it you start to see him limp or the crack goes to high then i'd call the ferrier but he should be fine :)

Yeah, it broke off yesterday while he was in pasture. He's acting perfectly normal, so False Alarm! =)

Thanks guys!
