my show team and I are going to the lexington horse center this weekend (horsecenter.org) and i'd really like my boys to look fantastic despite their grungy winter coat. my irish warmblood is partially clipped, and my thoroughbred has the hair of a wooly mammoth :-\ any tips to make them shine?

thanks so much :):):)

Take a damp cloth (just warm water) and roll it into a roll and start on a section and pull the cloth back over the hair and lift it up and start in the same spot and repeat. And move over the body doing it, your cloth is going to come back nasty! the damp cloth helps pull the dirt away from the skin but it doesnt make the hair wet (here its too cold to bathe so this is a good alternative) So i would bring more then one cloth, but it will leave the hair looking more like the natural shine instead of dull and dingy. It sthe cheapest alternative I have found. Otherwise a really really good brushing and a coat sheen, I likeFarnam® Laser Sheen® - Horse.com

I second the hot-toweling. And vacuuming them works wonders if they'll stand for it.

Have fun!

My little guy has a inch and a half coat. He still shines. I use flax (about half cup a day) and just brush him when he gets dirty. I wait for anything wet on him to dry before brushing though. I dont ride him though, as hes only 10months.

I would love to get my horses used to a shop vac lol.

I use uhm... its like what you put on swiffer mops.. the cloth.. that picks up dust and all that crap. It works WONDERS to remove dust and dead hair.

The swiffercloths... are you talking about pledge? I've heard of people using that, but I wouldn't use it where the saddle goes. It would probably have the same effect as ShoSheen. ;)

o_O No... Im talking about the reusable swiffer dry sweeper cloth refills.
They dont wet anything.. they just pick up ALL the dust and dirt. :] Can go ALL over the body.. and its nothing like show sheen.

Its like this... I buy something SIMILAR to it at the dollar store... its cheaper and the same thing,.

I totally love the idea of a disposable cloth like the swifer. I have to go pick up a box. I bring rags and clothes up all the time and they get all nasty so quickly.
