So, I officially bought Danny over the weekend, his trial period is over! The previous owner gave me his papers, but he hasn't been transfered since three owners ago. I have a transfer form from the last owner that registered him, with her signature, and a sales date of 8/2004. Can I just put my information in the buyers section and send it in?

yup you "can" do that. But the APHA frowns upon that. They like the owners on the papers to be in sucsession (sp) so you would have to pay for a bunch of transfers, but thats really silly and expensive, and sometimes impossible to do. I was looking into it for my mare. I had to track down her first owners (they never transfered her papers at all) and got them to sign the paperwork. I mailed out three identical transfer forms to people with the same name, in my mares birth state and finally found him. You're really lucky to have a previous owner give the paperwork like that.

The APHA might think its weird that you "bought" him in 2004 but are now just registering him. But since they see so much paperwork they might not really notice.

Nope, not true, at least a few years ago it wasnt. I registered my mare and the only reason I was a member (for a year) was because it was cheeper to do it that way.

As long as the transfer has the signature of the last recorded owner on it they should not care that there are five years in there. They might just assume that she has not bothered to transfer him or whatever.

It is silly to chase down all the in between owners and pay for all those transfers.

The buyer as listed on the transfer form must have a current membership in the same exact name or a nonmember fee will be charged.

APHA will not process a transfer if it is known that owners existed between the present owner and the owner of record according to APHA files. It may be necessary, therefore, for the new buyer to bring the ownership history up to date by providing APHA with transfers to and from all involved parties. Transfer fees are required for each transfer submitted. To avoid potential problems, it is recommended that incomplete or "open" transfers NOT BE SIGNED.

It still seems silly to chase down all the owners in between. Can you simply contact the owner you have on the papers and ask for a new transfer?

Well, I have a membership and when I checked my boy's registration info on the site, I discovered that his breeder is still his registered owner, not the previous owner who acutally signed the transfer form. Ugh, I guess that owner never actually registered him. I've tried to contact the breeder to see if she will sign a transfer for me but haven't heard back yet.

Its more then silly, it might be almost impossible and a little rediculous!! What the heck kinda rule is that? They certainly know no one is gunna follow it.

I hope you can get ahold of the breeder. Some people are really set on registering the horse in their name, but I didnt really care too much if it didnt work out.

I just send lacy's breeder a nice little letter, paperwork to sign, a copy of her papers and a current picture for reference. My mares breeder was really nice, he called my house and we chatted. He even send me pictures of some of his current babies, although I think he was just trying to sell them.

I emailed his breeder last week with a nice update on him, some pictures, and explained his registration situation. I asked if there was any assistance she could provide, but haven't heard back yet. Yeah, there is no way I'm going to be able to track down every owner he has had and do all the transfers. I'd like to have him in my name but I guess its not the end of the world!

I would just go with the signed transfer from whoever is the last recorded owner with APHA. (hopefully you can get that.)

As far as there being years between the written transfer date and when you send it in-- its not that uncommon. I have 2 Appaloosa mares that I have owned for 2-3 years that I haven't gotten around to transferring into my name yet, since I am not showing them... I bred one of them this year so will have to get the transfer done to register the foal. It has nothing to do with not wanting to pay a membership (I am a life member) just procrastination.
