Anticipating a rough night - word is medflight (critical care) ground has been nonstop with COVID patients, and some calls that should be CCT are leaking down to regular ALS. MA governor suggested the surge is coming this week. I hope this is over soon.
.
Thank you for being out there on the Covid19 front lines:Angel:

Please do your best to stay healthy:bowwdown::bowwdown:

We're predicted to get from 5-13 inches of snow today and tomorrow. Pretty typical for our Easter. Friday it hit 68*F and I finally got to ride.

Daughter's been riding all the outside horses and mine. I'm laying pretty low since I work in a hospital.

We're having a small family dinner. Just five of us for ham and fixings. We plan to make snowmen bunnies. They may not look like rabbits, or even snowmen, based on our past efforts, but the g'kids will like it.

I made a checkout stand out of boxes for the little ones and we're letting them play store. The house is quite a mess but that's okay. They did get crabby earlier so I got them to help me wash floors. By hand. Took some of the starch out of them.

Pictures of the snow bunnies would be great! Maybe the grandkids will wear themselves out a little more if they know their artwork will be displayed.

Scrubbing floors by hand, lollol. Yes ma’am that sure does take the starch out of a young one. mom would make me do that if I was too sassy - even if she had scrubbed them that morning, lollol

@RegalCharm, when I was growing up you had your choice between dyed chicks or ducklings and undyed rabbits. Never had much luck with keeping the chicks alive but the ducks and bunnies stayed healthy. After the ducks grew up my mom would make me give them to a friend who had a little stream on their property and my brat of a brother turned more than one of our rabbits loose. Thinking about it maybe on mom's orders because he never got into trouble for it but then he was the only boy so he never got into trouble over anything except smart mouthing mom which is when dad stepped in and set him straight about that. LOL

. . . Yesterday we finally had a fire and burned most of the mouldy hay that has been piling up over winter. We'll have to light it again when more snow melts, but it actually burned down pretty good. . .
I was all set to burn some brush piles last week when we had a brief return of snow on the ground (no permit required when it's snow-covered) but we called the FD to check in as a courtesy and were told no burning because of coronavirus! Presumably to reduce the chance they have to come out down to zero (from very very low). So looks like I'm going to have a pile right in front of my run-in shed all summer :frown_color:

Not often the weather is as good as it is at the mom not, over the Easter weekend.

It reminds me of an Easter many moons ago, when I was in my teens. My cousin was staying along with her brother, sister and cousin. On the Easter Monday I was meant to be competing in a Hunter Trials but it was called off because of a strangles outbreak so, I had the day off.

My b/friend, cousin Linda and her cousin Francis and her much younger brother, Michael and I took the dogs out for a walk. We reached an area on the cliffs where there is a brook running into a pond before going over the cliff into the sea. I don't know how but we had a piggy back fight on the stepping stones over the pond and ended up soaked.

We walked on the dry off and ended up walking across where the cliffs had fallen. The whole area is prone to slipping as it is a blue clay. We had dried off but were now filthy!

We ended up about 5 miles from home, filthy, scratched to pieces and very hungry, so we went to a pub which was packed. Between us we managed to have enough money to get a Ploughman's Lunch, cheese, crusty bread and pickles. The place was packed out and we laid on the grass eating. We had enough to catch a bus home but Francis wanted to go see the lighthouse just down the road.

We walked down there and they wanted to go to the top. I had to wait and hold onto the five dogs. We had all been fooling around and next thing I knew they grappled me, removed my trousers and tied me to a fenc!

So, there I was tied up with the cattle coming to see what was going on and sniffing at me. People walking past looking at me but not offering to untie me!

I heard them yelling from the top of the lighthouse and next thing my trousers were being flown from the flag pole. When they returned they did bring my pants back.

We decided to catch the bus back but these were very busy, not many people owned cars back then, but many would not let us on because of the dogs. Eventually we boarded and returned home. When we got indoors my mother turned and said, "I hope you lot aren't expecting breakfast!"

Cousins were meant to be going back and someone had to go to the phone box and call to say they would be late.

Now my cousin lives here (daughter of my Aunt) we usually go to her place for Easter, not this year. I wonder if she recalls that adventure, I must ask her.

Haven't a clue what made me remember this other than the weather.

Hmmm, I've never noticed a difference in sweating. My oldest mare (26 this year), I've had her for 8 years now and I've been testing her 2x year all those years because she just has that "Cushings look"- saggy belly, not much topline (even when she was in regular work, which she's not now), years when she had a coat that looked too thick and took too long to shed out (though this year, she is slicked up already and her coat looks the best of all three of mine, go figure). Mare #2, turns 23 later this year, also looks Cushings/IR- keeps fat pads on and will go cresty on any grass, not shedding out great right now, etc. And both are Morgans, so predisposed. The vet I used before I moved a couple of years ago was fond of saying- "it's not IF they end up with Cushings, it's just when." So, that's why I've kept up with the testing 2x year even though I've had people tell me it's a waste of money since they've *so far* been negative.
Willows first test came back negative despite some typical symptoms.
My vet sent a second test to a different facility (Cornell) a few months later and it came back positive.

Compared to our other horses in her pre Cushing’s era she did sweat more despite a normal fine coat.
She also felt the cold more.

She’s never had a saggy belly look and apart from losing the abnormal crest since she’s been on Prascend, her top line has remained good.

She does struggle to maintain weight now though. Prior to having Cushing’s she was a really easy keeper.

Happy Easter everyone. It's currently snowing with a 50 mph wind. I can't see the tree in our backyard, which makes me feel better about not getting together with family due to the coronavirus. I left the horses with two or three days worth of hay last night so nobody has to go out to feed them today, which turns out was prudent as the county has pulled the plows off the roads, so driving out to do it isn't a real wise decision. We got sleet before it turned to snow, so everything has a 1/2 inch layer of ice on it under the snow, and visibility is near zero. Yesterday it was 70 degrees and beautiful.

I scored a small ham at the store this week, so we'll have ham, mashed potatoes, carrots, and rolls for a small Easter meal for the two of us. Other than that, it's going to be a lazy day.

Surprise of surprises... I ordered groceries online with today (Easter Sunday) as delivery. Figured I'd get a text saying it would be delivered tomorrow. Nope. I just got a text that my "designated shopper" is shopping! The groceries should arrive in an hour or so.

Yesterday the weather was nice, so my son and a friend went kayaking. It's an easy hobby to keep distance while enjoying. Today is cool and blustery. Supposed to rain on and off all day. Tango took advantage of the morning rain and rolled. He's mud covered. Diva Cally was hiding in the barn!

This morning started out a bit drizzly but by 10 am it had stopped so Sis and I did a little schooling, we are improving on our left lead canter, so that's good. then we went out for a ride around the farm, it was windy and when trotting into the wind even more so but my gelding is getting used to working in all weather and handled it well today.
It's sunny out now and Hubby and I are going to have a quiet afternoon maybe watch some TV if I can find something interesting.

I usually don't like to plan anything with the family for Easter or Thanksgiving as if it is good weather I would much rather ride. Of course being retired now that's not as big a deal as when I was working and riding time could be limited.

We're grateful for everyone's support. I do love my job, even now that extra peril is involved. To the best we can, we're doing ok. My Tuesday partner & I are planning to get donuts for the ER staff at our primary hospital.

Howdy all! Sorry I missed the Friday talk... going to catch up now :).

Went to the beach and self isolated there... the beach was EMPTY! But I think it helped as they are in a rejuvenation phase. It was nice to hang out on the beach early each morning and have a nice chat with God. I did help out some with work on some out buildings, a little sore from all the work but it felt good.

I hope everyone had a good weekend. I remember doing the Easter egg hunt every year, sometimes at church other times at the grandparents with lots of cousins. It was boiled colored eggs at the beginning then switched to the plastic eggs with goodies in them.
@Foxhunter - Sorry to hear about Iggy
@aubie - I always appreciate these threads! Even if I'm late getting to it... nice to catch up.
@RegalCharm - I wish there was a Rural King here! I've heard great things about it.
@JCnGrace - The farrier following you was too funny! I had went around my trailer after getting back from a trail ride the other day only to see my friend dropping drawers I quickly did an about face!
@redbadger - stay safe! And thank you for being out there at this time

I agree in crazy weather and watching for Colic.... it had been warm and then one night it went to 35... crazy weather, I always have banamine for a just in case. I have gotten my garden planted, but I had went to Lowes and there was not ONE tomato plant... bummer.

@Foxhunter I am truly sorry to hear about Iggy. As I type my 16yr old dachshund is snoring behind me. He is starting to have a few accidents in the house and his eyes are most definitely cloudy. I am hoping he stays healthy long enough for warm weather to come so he can spend some time outside barking at the horses and cows (his favorite pastime)

Not much going on here. The weather turned from fairly pleasant to cold with flurries and high winds. Our Easter was quiet. Just hubby, son and I. I missed my daughter who is at school 6 1/2 hours away. Made a nice ham, mashed potatoes, corn, deviled eggs and an apple crisp.

Tired of being in the house but I was never much of a shopper so it's just winter/spring stir craziness.

One of the most difficult tasks I had to undertake was finding a dog for my 90 year old mother. None of the major charities would entertain a woman of that age having a dog from them despite telling them that exercise was covered and if anything happened to Mum either sis or I would have the dog.

To cut a long story short I ended up with an elderly English Pointer, mum's favourite breed. They were a match made in heaven and when mum passed I kept Berti formabout another year until it was time for him to go.

Not long after the secretary of the E.P. r science called and asked if I would foster Max as there were 'issues' with him. That was six years ago. Issues resolved but when he went to two different adoptees, the issues resurfaced and he was returned to me.

Anyway, this afternoon I received a call from the secretary asking me if I could possibly foster an orange and white E.P. pup when they can bring the litter in from Spain.

I have always had multiple dogs and will be down to just Max soon. I wasn't looking but guess I have been found!

Aubie might well have started this thread as a Friday one but anyone else notice it has become a sort of diary for the week?
Yes and I like it! It's fun even if nothing horse related is going on it's a way to stay involved :)

__________

I worked all weekend. Saturday morning I'm driving to work and notice a high headed horned heifer strutting across someone's alfalfa field. I was about to call my boss to see if it was his as he is the only one within miles who has corriente heifers. Then I pass him on the road, fair enough, he's looking for her and will see her. I figured I'd run to the barn and if he needed me to saddle horses and jump them in the trailer he'd call me.
Come to find out 15 head had got out at 2:30 AM and were on the highway and peoples yards. Mind you this the south end of the ski valley where celebrities have fancy vacation homes..lol...so I'm imagining Tom Hanks in his night shirt getting chased back into his house trying to shu these huffy heifers out his flower beds...
Meanwhile, boss is searching so he can tell me where to bring the trailer to load the heifer, one of the stud horses knocks his automatic waterer and floods his stall. I got the water shut off, turned knucklehead out in the round pen while I mopped up his stall and put dry bedding in.
Saturday ended up being a long day.

Sunday was better I was home by 3 pm and made BBQ pork ribs with potatoes and gravy for Easter Sunday supper. Not very traditional but delicious!

I took today off to spend time with hubby and get laundry done as he is headed out to OK in the morning . Back to work tomorrow!

My neighbour's, Cass and Abel have been taking the dogs out, not my old girl who has a potter around the block. Anyway today Cass texted me to ask if I would take them.

I decided to go the what I call the Butterfly Meadows. I parked at the end of the track that once led to the riding school, crossed the road with the three dogs, walked up the bridle path known as Chalk Lane to the top of the Downs.

It was a beautiful day, sunny with a breeze, really spring like.

I was going to doma circular route just over an hour walking steadily. I arrived at a trigometric point where you can see right around the Island. No person on sight. The. It was all downhill.

Bria was finding it all a bit much but perked up after a short rest. I decided to cut through the woods rather than go round them making it shorter for Bria (and me)

Wrong and a very silly decision! I knew it would be rough but didn't realise just how rough the cattle had made it. Poor Bria was struggling. She started to walk along a bank which was fine but then was worried she wasn't with me so I climbed the bank. Much easier going until I came to amfallen tree. I should have been able to duck under it but try as I might there was no way. So......... down on my knees I go crawl under the branch, haul myself up on the wire fence and finally made it to better ground.

I am not sure who was most relieved, Bria or me. LOL

We arrived back home, other neighbour's were in their garden and Tony was about to make a cuppa. I put the dogs in and sat at a distance with them for about thirty minutes.

I did start to do some gardening but it was to much for my back, when it is sore it is like a red hot poker down my spine so I came indoors made a cuppa, took an Ibrobruphen and fell asleep for a couple of hours. Dogs woke me when it was feed time.

Cass came over to collect Arthur just after 5. She and Abel had gone on a walk (she has broken her big toe) so she was also tired, moaning about Abel force marching her twenty miles with a broken toe. LOL
