I recently bought a registered Quarter horse; however, the lady I bought him from didn't have his papers, and she never got them from his original owner. Does anyone know if there is a way to have me listed as his owner on the registry? I have his registration number, just not his original paperwork. Any thoughts?

Nope. You need a hardcopy of the transfer papers with the previous owner's signature signing the horse off to you. You can contact AQHA to see who's name the horse's paperwork is in, contact them and see if they'll get a reissue of the paperwork, sign it off and send it to you.

If not, your S.O.L.

Not entirely true CLaPorte, she can contact AQHA and explain her situation. I've had horses transfered if the last on record owner cannot be contacted. We did have his registration papers within a couple of weeks.

OP- They may be able to just let you print off, complete the transfer papers and send them in...If not, they can tell you who the last on record owners are and they may be able to sign the transfer of ownership over to you... hopefully AQHA will just let you do it yourself but if not and you have to mail the transfer papers to the previous owner on his record, make sure you also send a prefilled out envelope with a stamp on it.

Interesting DrumRunner, I would think that a blood test and my brand inspection paperwork should suffice in showing authenticity of ownership. Part of me has wanted to contact the original owner because I know she loved him dearly and was torn apart to let him go, and lives not too far from where I do. I'm sure she would love to hear he is doing well, and all. Has anybody contacted a horse’s old owner or is this generally frowned upon? If it were me I would want to know my horse I spent 14 years with was in a loving home.

Definitely, if you know the original owner just print off transfer papers and maybe take a visit to see her. I've talked to all of the previous owners and still stay in contact with the previous owners of my two mares..Hickory is now 22 and I've had him for 7 years..When I first got him I was interested in his back ground so I Google'd and called his breeders and the trainer who started him. It's nice to find out more information about your horse and she'll probably love hearing how he's doing.

You will have to pay to transfer though. Not just the $15 for yourself, but let's say your horse had 4 owners before you. You will have to pay $15 for every time she had a different owner.

With my arabian, 4 people were involved. Breeder registered horse. Owner #1 wrote her name on the paper but didn't submit. (no special transfer form them) #2 had the paper but didn't update and submit. #3, me, had to go to #1 to sign the transfer, which she did promptly. As far as the registry was concerned #2 didn't exist. I got to pay for the two changes of ownership.

This is some really great information!
SkyeDawn, I'm only the third owner of his so that's not to love horrible.
Now I just need to get contact info from his first owner. Anybody know how hard that is to get from AQHA?

I have a brand inspection and my bill of sale but there is no AQHA registration paperwork, because the person I bought him from never received any from his first owner. She did however have his registration number. I'll call that number and see what I can find out...wish me luck!
