Asking to Ride My Old Trainer's Horses

Hey everyone. Back in 2014 I started taking lessons from a girl and learned to barrel race on her two horses. I bought my current horse from her parents a year later and started her on barrels. I stopped taking lessons from her in 2016 because she went to dental hygiene school and our schedules just didn't work out. I've spoken with her a little bit over the last few years.

Anyways, I've been wanting to ask for a while now to ride the two horses I used to ride and possibly barrel race on them. I'd like to do more in barrel racing and improve my riding. My horse is 3D/4D and just won't take me anywhere. The girl hasn't ridden much the past year and is now expecting.

How do I go about asking? Obviously I would cover entry fees, travel expenses, etc. and exercise them at her place.

Thanks!

Personally, I wouldnt ask. Might be a reason she's not riding as much besides being busy, and expecting, maybe injury, just wanting them to have time off, ect....I had two horses perfectly healthy while I was expecting and just gave them the time off, I had several people ask me if I would let them ride, and it was NO every time. Just a personal opinion but thats just me. Best of luck

ETA: One way to see if she's interested in you riding her horses would be to tell her to let you know if she wanted her horses worked, shown, ect, you'd be more than willing to do so. I wouldnt just come out and ask if you could ride as you technically have your own horse, if she's interested, take her up on it but if not, not much you can do. Def not something I would push though, throw it out there, and let her choose :D

She let someone rodeo a little bit on one of the horses this past summer. I don't think they're injured.

It sounds like you have a good relationship with her so why not? Would you be willing to pay to part board and show them? If so then you're proposing to both exercise her horses and give her money. It's certainly not rude to ask, in my books, as long as you ask politely and are willing to take a "no" gracefully, which is sounds like you are.

Thanks! She actually lives on her parents farm and they have a stable, so no board. But I definitely would cover entry fees and the such like if I entered them in shows.

It can't hurt to ask, she may be toying with the idea but doesn't want to get together not a big deal right now with a stranger.

Just say hey. I've got a horse who's taken me about as far as he can. I want to go higher next year. Since you taught me and I bought my horse here, would you have any horses I could lease?
Go over your financial plans and see what she says!
If it's not something she wants to do, ask if she knows she of anyone else.
