Teddy is by far the most injury prone of all my horses (see my last post about his hooves). On the bright side, I’m learning how to treat a lot of different kinds of injuries. He had this this morning, when I brought him in. It looks like a bad scratch (I don’t know if you can see, but you could still see some of the skin attached to some of it). The worst part is in his inner thigh, but he has scratches all the way down to his coronet. It seems like a little swollen at the inner thigh but not tender; however, he was tender a few inches below that. I cold hosed, applied Betadine scrub and rubbed it everywhere, let that sit for ten minutes, rinsed, dried, and applied Swat. I will be back out there tomorrow – would you do the same thing again? Or do something different? He doesn’t seem to be lame – would you ride him with this injury? I think it’s probably OK unless he acts lame when I ride him, but I wanted second opinions.

I use Alusheild wound spray works good. That scratch wouldn't stop me from riding if it was my horse. If sound I ride. Just try to keep it clean it will be fine.

Thanks, I'll look that up. I was just telling my daughter we need to up-size our horse health care kit. It's beyond overstuffed -- stuff has just exploded out to the floor. Not good when we're trying to find something.

I know that feeling! I once called my mare "Ms. Self-Destruct" because she'd find every way possible to get an injury. She once rubbed on a fencerail and got a 3" splinter in her neck that I had to pull out, flush, and then find a way to protect from flies (SWAT is wonderful stuff, but I put it around a wound and not in a wound.) I had another one rub on a T-post and 'stab' herself in the flank -- luckily the wound was only a subcutaneous hole without muscle or vital organ damage. The vet cleaned it out and my job was to use a catheter tip syringe to flush it out with betadine, twice per day. Ahh, horses. =) And no T-posts in my life now.

(Edit: I figure you would have seen this, but I'm going to point it out just in case.) I'm looking at the other leg - left hind. That first picture really appears as if there's swelling in the upper cannon, the hock possibly all the way up to the gaskin. There also appears to be a darker patch of hair, which I'm pretty sure indicates bruising? Do you see that? If that's new, it's vet time and I wouldn't ride. Keep him active on a lead, roundpen, or lunge line if you must, and that will help keep everything moving.

As for the scratches, flush any puncture wounds (anywhere you see skin loss, or a hole with pink or red) with betadine and surround it with SWAT if it's exposed. Vetericyn products are also good, I used the equine spray and spray-gel to treat a one-off case of scratches. Be sure to keep the legs clean. Hydrogen peroxide is good to use if you believe a wound might start to have necrotic tissue or proud flesh. I don't think that will be an issue here, but it's something to consider.

Dang it! Looking at the pictures now, it seems bad. But I think it may be the camera angle. Surely it couldn't be as swollen as it looks there, and I didn't notice when I was working on his other leg. I will take a look at it when I go out tomorrow.

Also thanks for your reply.

You're very welcome! Let us know what you find, and feel free to post a few more photos if you can so we can see the healing progress =) If the left hind's fine, test the right where it was tender. If it's better today and he's not lame, just treat the scratches and go for a ride! You're doing a fine job.

It must have just been the camera angle because I looked him over thoroughly today and didn't see it. All of the scratches from yesterday were fine except the one at the top, which was still a little raw. We had to give him a bath today anyway because of his rain rot (I have an anti-fungal anti-bacterial shampoo) and I put the betadine scrub on it again. I put Swat only in the top cut. Besides the rain rot, hoof cracks, and cuts, he's just fine now.

Vetericyn and krudbuster worked quite well for me if you ever need just a liquid spray, gel spray, or "putty" for medicating rain rot or scratches. =) So glad to hear he's doing well, the rascal. I hope those hoof cracks do better! Look forward to seeing results in the other thread.
