Hay y'all! My gelding CJ has a bald face, and his whole nose and mouth is getting burned up. I've put sunscreen on him, but I can only go out to the barn every saturday and sunday, so I'm looking for something that will last a while?

I only have a month left of school, but i want him to be happy until i get out. I'll be going out every day this summer.

This ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ works...
So does zinc oxide...the stuff lifeguards use on their noses.
It comes in "white" or "clear"....maybe this would last longer.
My horse hates fly masks with the extended nose piece on them...rips the thing off.

The ideology of my barn is that "if you want to give him supplements or put anything on it, you come out and do it yourself." I'll try the fly mask, he's very gentle and I'm almost positive he wouldn't mind it a bit. But for now I'll try the Desitin. Thanks!!

I will second the Desitin, but add to it-----

I know specifically the one I buy is thicker and stronger in its zinc oxide content than tube type Desitin.
It is the jar version of it at walmart. Either generic or name brand, I believe they are the same amount of zinc. But either way, for whatever reason the jarred one has much more zinc oxide in it than the tube and it is also significantly thicker.

I put it on my daughter's greyed-to-completely white appy who is very pink skinned in the face all over. I only need to apply it about 2x per week to get good coverage and prevent sunburn. It works great around the eyes as well, as the jar kind is so thick it doesn't run nearly as much as the tube.
I have used to tube as well, so I feel i can make an accurate comparison. :)

There may be other types/brands of zinc oxide that are just as good or maybe even better, but just wanted to share my experience with the jarred ones at wally world, as they are relatively inexpensive, considering their need for large coverage use. :)

i have a mare with a bald face on one side. she burns really easy out here in the Arizona desert sun. her eye and muzzle (and everywhere she has pink skin) will turn red and scabby from sunburn if i dont protect them.

i use a Cashel Crusader long nose fly mask on her and it works great! they are not cheap as far as fly masks go but it is worth every penny to keep my mare comfortable in the desert sun. she is really good about keeping the mask on so i only have to put sunscreen on her when i work her because once i take the mask off it only takes her about 15 minutes to start burning. if you are worried about your horse getting the mask off while you aren't there you can always put sunscreen or zink oxide on him under the mask just in case.

if you decide to use a mask i would recommend getting 2 of them. the part that hangs over the nose gets dirty from hay, dirt, and snot etc. i have 2 of them so that i can put a clean one on her when i pull off the other one to wash it. i usually use the hose and a stiff bristle body brush to clean it (the bristles on the body brush do a great job of cleaning the plastic mesh of the fly mask)

Need to keep horse up in daytime, as you don't want to get over into photosensitivity, which can cause liver damage that can't be repaired.

May not have plants that set this off, but medications and de-wormers and grooming items can trigger it also.

Not a good thing, and even keeping mask on, won't help.

What? I don't think I can get half pasture half stall board anywhere around here... And I'm definitely not stall boarding; too expensive and he needs to be able to roam and run.
